Carrier To American Standard

Monday, February 8th, 2010

This heat Pump was kinda a head scratcher for me, not because the Carrier Heat Pump we replaced was only 10 years old, but the company that put this in is usually very customer orientated and for some reason let this one fall to the way side. The customer had been having issues with the system since day 1, and for some reason this company could not fix the problem. Maybe the technicians that had been coming out every year after year trying to remedy the problem did not understand air flow …or maybe the head office did not want the burden of dealing with the real problem. Never the less they lost a customer!

Existing Carrier Air Handler

Existing Carrier Air Handler

I must apologize for the picture above, I forgot my camera so I must resort to a picture my technician took when we he was called out. Everything he found on the system suggested they where trying workarounds, meaning not dealing with the real issue. The real issue being lack of airflow, the system could not deliver the air needed for the heat pump.

New American Standard Heat Pump

New American Standard Heat Pump

The solution above, an American Standard variable speed air handler. Even though the existing air handler was rated for the job, it could not push the air needed through the existing ducting. BUT this air handler is designed to do just that.

The American Standard heat Pump above is a perfect match for the indoor handler and existing home. The existing refer lines where flushed clean to switch over to the R410a refrigerant.

Fujitsu Mini Split In The San Juan Islands

Friday, September 4th, 2009

Once and I mean once in a blue moon you get a opportunity like this one, a home owner in the San Juan Islands wanting a Mini Split Heat Pump system installed in his secluded home. When I say secluded I mean he lives on a island with a small handful of other people. Fortunately he does own his own plane and is willing to provide transportation seeing how there is no public access.

I have flown many times to the San Juan Islands, but I must admit, my men that went over to do the work could not have asked for a better day.

We are seeing more and more of these fujitsu mini split systems being installed, they are very affordable, take up very little room and are very very quiet.

As you can see these units are very small in size taking up very little room. The pad is a preformed cladlite type of material, very durable.

Not always can you place the unit above the window, plenty of room here.

My men came back grinning from ear to ear, they really enjoyed the day and did a very good job.

Special COLEMAN note.

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

I have been a dealer for many brands of equipment, none of the top name brands would not have done what Coleman did for my customer recently. I installed a new Coleman 14.5 Seer for a customer in Mount Vernon, days later the customer complained of a possible electrical issue with the Heat Pump. We responded and found no real electrical issues, but did find the compressor in the unit making an unusual harmonic sound. The sound was nothing I heard of before in a heat pump. We called Coleman, they ran us through a typical Q&A session and even though the unit was functioning correctly, within a few days I was replacing the customers Heat Pump. Free of charge of course.

Now your asking what was so unusual? And as a customer I would ask the same question. And as a HVAC contractor i will tell you that no manufacture responds that fast for one, secondly I would have expected the manufacture to debate whether or not it was a noise that could be lived with, thirdly under this kind of condition they normally would have shipped us a new compressor, not a whole Heat Pump unit. It is far cheaper for the manufacture to replace a compressor than a entire unit.

I still do not know what was causing this unusual noise, Coleman was also scratching their heads, but all that aside .. what truly matters is that my customer is satisfied. A satisfied customer is a referring customer. 90% of my work is generated from referrals and i would like to keep it that way.

Whats a TXV?

Friday, August 7th, 2009

I decided to take a few minutes and take a few pictures to show you what a TXV is and tell you why I use them. A TXV is a metering device installed into your indoor coil, it will deliver the precise amount of liquid refrigerant into your indoor AC or HP coil that is required. Your system will operate more precisely and with greater efficiency with a TXV installed, otherwise you simply use a orifice. Why use a orifice? .. COST savings! Make sure you get a TXV with your Air conditioner or Heat Pump.

Coleman Heat Pump Tight Fit

Friday, August 7th, 2009

I can not imagine a tighter fitting indoor coil, we custom cut this Heat Pump coil into this upflow Trane furnace system with no room to spare. I made sure to order the closest matching coil cabinet I could. Again I started this sales call as a AC call, but they decided to switch over to a heat Pump. The day was long because of a follow up on the previous job… but we got it done. The Coleman Heat Pump is a 14.5 Seer CHJF series. I beleive out of the Coleman line up, this is the most unit you can get for your buck.

Coleman Heat Pump Replacement

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

This older Bryant heat pump finally gave up the ghost. It was improperly installed and had a leak that the previous service contractors could not locate. It was time to be replaced. The unit was installed within 5″ of the back wall when 24″ is required from that side of the unit. The line set was exposed to potential damage.

Water Heaters In Mobile Homes

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Lately I have ran across several non-mobile home gas/lp water heaters being installed in mobile homes, The owner not even knowing the difference.

There are 2 different types of mobile home tanks.
1st type – The hot water tank is accessed through an exterior access door, NOT from within the home.
2nd type- The hot water tank is accessed through the interior of the home.

Both types have to MH approved. The type that is accessed from within the home is EXTREMLY expensive and this is why contractors take short cuts, but when it comes time to sell the home the inspector will catch this!

Heat Pump HSPF’s

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

For the credit of up to $1500 your heat pump will have to be a minimum of 8.5 HSPF and a minimum 15 SEER. The only way to get these minimums is to install a matched system, meaning you will have to install a matched furnace/coil or air handler and coil. You simply can not buy a Heat Pump and think your getting the credits. If your HVAC contractor does not give you a matched system you will NOT get a credit.
