Tips for Saving Money

5 Tips for Saving Money on Your Utility Bill

By Hannah West

From solar energy to efficient washers and LED bulbs, there are more and more ways to save money on your monthly energy bill. Unfortunately, those solutions require an up-front investment that isn’t practical for many people. Here are a few ways to save on your bill today without having to dish out first.

Wash Your Clothes in Cold Water

Heating water accounts for most of the energy that your washing machine uses. You can buy cold-water detergents that will get your clothes just as clean, and you don’t even have to separate into lights and darks like you do when you plan on using the warm setting. The heating rule is also true of the dryer, but that one’s a little harder to get around. However, if you’re truly determined to save, of course there’s a solution: get old-fashioned and hang them up to air dry.

Adjust Your Thermostat

Turn off the air conditioner or heat in a room that you don’t plan to use for a while and shut the door on your way out. Make sure to raise the temperature when you leave the house (or if it’s cold outside, lower it) to preserve the energy you normally would use making everyone comfortable. It may not feel great for the first few minutes when you return, but you can always adjust and get cozy or cool again within no time. If you live in a cooler climate, try using standing fans, which don’t require nearly as much energy as air conditioning systems.

Make sure to set your winter and summer thermostat accordingly. On the heat setting, it should be around 72 but on the cool setting, 76 can be perfectly comfortable. Always keep your vents clean for best results and savings.

Take Advantage of Off-Peak Hours

Learn about your utility company’s time of use rates. Usually, energy use is highest in the few hours after work and in the morning while people are getting ready for the day. Because it’s more in demand at those times, the rates are higher than in off-peak hours. If you can significantly reduce your energy use in peak hours, you could end up slashing down your bill.

Don’t Forget the Windows

With effortless air conditioning at our fingertips, sometimes we forget the difference it can make to open the windows and let a breeze blow through on a mild day. If this isn’t an option for you, don’t forget the many other roles that windows play in your indoor air temperature. For one thing, they allow heat from the sunlight in. In the winter, the sunshine can help you heat up your house. But in the summer, you may want to close window coverings in the area that the sun shines brightest into your home.

Make sure to properly weather strip your windows and doors to seal air leaks in your home. This will stop cool air from leaking in during winter, which can help you save on your heating bill.

Turn off Devices

With the number of electronic devices we use every day, it’s easy to overlook the ones we leave plugged in or turned on when they’re not in use. You could buy a smart power strip that will save you money in the long run, but the cheapest way to take care of this is just to make a habit of turning off and unplugging devices when you’re finished with them for the next few hours.

Appliances account for only a small percentage of our energy use at home, but TVs, at-home gaming devices, and desktop computers are the biggest energy-suckers, so be particularly mindful of those. If you don’t want to run around unplugging individual devices, use the extra regular power strips you have lying around your house so that you can turn off several devices with one action.

2011 Tax Credit Extended Thru 2012

On January 3, 2013 President Obama signed legislation designed to avoid the “fiscal cliff” and keep rates from increasing for every American who pays taxes. In Addition to its many other tax provisions, the bill retroactively reinstates the 25C tax credits for highly efficient HVAC and water heating equipment that expired at the end of 2011.

Erratic Furnace issues

There is nothing worse for a technician than to get dispatched to a no heat call and then upon arrival finding out the furnace is working correctly. He will run it through all its cycles several times and find absolutely nothing wrong with the furnace.

Furnace Control Board

Furnace Control Board

And of course if the technician leaves without finding the issue the customer will call back within days and complain the furnace is not working again. This is very frustrating for both the technician and the customer, especially if he shows up for the 2nd time to find the furnace is still working just fine. We have found under these circumstances that the furnace control board is more than likely the issue. The picture above shows what appears to be a perfectly good control board.

Furnace Control Board under.

Its after you flip the board over and inspect it that you will see a hot spot on the board. Its hot spots like the one above that will cause intermittent issues with the furnace operation. Sometimes the furnace works great .. other times it short cycles and blows cold air. These issues will get gradually worse over time. Simply turning the board over can save a technician a lot of time.

The hard thing to overcome for a technician is being 100% confident that this is the issue with the furnace, after all it is a expensive repair. But in almost every case that we have changed the control board under these circumstances the erratic operation went away. And if you do not change the control board you may end up with a possible fire hazard as shown above.

Otter Damaged Flex Crossover

OK .. I know I have posted this type of damage before, but just in case some of you don’t know what your crawl space looks like I thought i would post another picture.

Damaged Cross Over

Damaged Cross Over

In this case this is a mobile home located on a beach front, otters have been coming in under the home and having some fun with the crossover. The crossover delivers heat from one section of the home to the other section of the home. Cutting into a crossover will cost you dearly in energy costs if its not repaired. So we removed the existing flexible ducting that made up the crossover and replaced it with metal.

Animal Damaged Ducting.

In all the years I have been in this trade I have never experienced the amount of damaged caused by animals to a heating system like I encountered on this last system. In fact if it wasn’t for the amount of frustration the customer had from dealing with another heating company I may have turned this job down. When you have a customer with a home under 2000 sq ft and a heating bill (Nat gas) of $350 a month you have a serious problem.

Damaged Ducting

Damaged Ducting

The picture above is of the 3 main trunks coming off the supply plenum, the reason for 3 mains instead of 1 is because of clearance issues, there simply wasn’t room. These 3 main ducts where covered in small prey remains and from the looks of it the bedding area for what ever lived here.

Damaged Ducting

Damaged Ducting

Here I took a picture from inside the plenum looking down one of the mains, all 3 main ducts had similar openings. At a recent coarse I took on duct sealing I was told that a opening of 1 sq inch in a heating duct is equivalent to a 2′ sq opening in a wall. All together I encountered 5 serious openings such as this 1 and 3 minor openings, this is following another heating contractor who was here less than a year ago!

So even though you see what kind of damage can occur with flexible ducting I am still a big fan of its use, but when you have openings into your crawl space you will eventually have duct damage. So either use hard metal ducting or protect your crawl space and do annual inspections.
