Mount Vernon WA Church Furnace

Mount Vernon WA Church Furnace

There are certain types of heating and cooling projects that really appeal to me, these projects generally have the biggest impact or affect for the customer and are usually the most challenging. This Mount Vernon WA Church Furnace project was for the Church Of Christ in Mount Vernon, their oil furnace was from 1951 and it was a monster. Time for a upgrade!

The Monster In The Room

The furnace was located in the church basement in a room about 9′ by 9′ and it consumed most of that room. I had to stand back out of the room just to take a good picture. One of the biggest challenges with small community Church’s is the furnace sizing. A lot of small Church’s only get occupied say 1 to 2 times per week and the rest of the time the furnace generally stays off. So you have to consider raising the temperature say from 50 degrees to 70 degrees just for a few hours, and within a short period of time. And of coarse keeping the noise level down. Perfect for the American Standard 95% 2 Stage Variable.

American Standard, To The Rescue.

One of the complaints from the church was the down stairs always seemed cold, and even though they had damper controls to help with this issue it never seemed to work correctly, therefore they abandoned that part of the system and went to space heaters. The American Standard 95% Variable 2 Stage furnace with a Honeywell 4″ pleated filter system (above) was installed to deal with just the down stairs, fortunately the existing duct work was zoned to do just that. As you can see the foot print is much smaller than the oil furnace.

Conclusion

Churches have a very unique situation when it comes to heating and cooling demands. In this Mount Vernon WA Church Furnace project an American Standard 95% gas furnace worked out perfectly.

American Standard 95 .. again

I love upgrading customers equipment, here we upgraded our customer from a single stage 80% to a new American Standard 90 to 95 variable speed 2-stage gas furnace. Not only will this furnace run much quieter than their existing furnace, but it will also save them 5% more on their heating bill.

American Standard  is a Trane

The first picture is the older furnace and hot water heater. The Trane unit was and still is manufactured by American Standard.

Bradford White Tank

As you can see we also replaced the existing hot water heater with a new Bradford white water heater. I have installed many brands of hot water heaters, I prefer Bradford White. I will usually discount the hot water tank when replacing the furnace at the same time.

Years ago I use to be an Lennox furnace dealer ... and way before that I use to install Lennox furnaces for a local company.

Lennox Pulse

Lennox Pulse

I can not tell you how many Lennox pulse furnaces I have installed, but I can tell you I absolutely hated the Lennox pulse because of the noise it produced. Because of the way it burns its fuel it creates a pulsing/knocking sound that is so annoying it will drive you out of your home. We literally had to install mufflers and vibration pads to try to help bring down the noise.

Here we have a 100,000 btu Lennox pulse, the grand daddy of noise makers. Seeing this old knocker reminded of my early days installing when I was in my early 20's. Fortunately for my customer there is the new American Standard 95% Variable 2 stage gas furnace that is mouse whisper compared to the pulse.

I had to replace the existing venting with larger 3" PVC, do a few duct changes and added a Honeywell 4" pleated filter bank. Other than that the job went fairly smooth. And because the existing thermostat location could not be moved easily we went with a Honeywell wireless thermostat. If you want to move your thermostat location but cant because of wiring issues ... use the wireless... very cool.

American Standard AC

Installing a American Standard AC

This older RHEEM 80% furnace has lived its life and ready for the scrap yard. In fact my customer not only wants a better quality furnace but one with a higher efficiency rating as well. And lets not forget about air conditioning.

American Standard fits the bill

The American Standard 95% Variable Speed 2 Stage with an American Standard air conditioner fits the bill perfectly. American Standard is IMO the best furnace on the market today, I talk to a lot of technicians as well as personally service many brands myself... hands down I really do not think you can beat the quality.

Install the American Standard Air Conditioner

The new American Standard furnace sits perfectly on its matching indoor coil, the new PVC venting runs up and out through the roof ... and the condensate runs into a simple condensate pump. The refer line set runs up, over and down the wall to the new AC unit. With the help of a preformed pad the AC installation happens rather quickly. In fact most of our installations take less than 8 hours.

Repair or Replace?

Spend Money to Save Money

The 2 Payne 90% LP furnaces were getting more and more costly to repair and maintain. My customer decided it was better to replace them than to have constant repair bills. Based on the condition on these 2 furnaces, I had to agree.

Uplflow Vs. Downflow

It’s not very often in a residential application I get to show a side by side comparison between an upflow and downflow furnace. The furnace on the left is an downflow and the one on the right is an upflow. You can tell by the way the ducting is routed.

Honeywell F100 Filters for the Win

The 2 new American Standard 95% LP furnaces where fairly easy to install with some duct alterations mainly to the upflow furnace. You can see the 2 new Honeywell F100 filter banks installed on the intakes of the furnaces. Adding the F100 filters really improves indoor air quality in the home. These systems gives the customer the option of converting them over to electronic at a later date if need be.

American Standard Heating System

Strange Heating System Installs

I have seen some pretty weird heating system installations. Some make me wonder why the installer put all the effort into short cutting when it would have been faster to do it right. This is one of those.

York 80% Furnace part of the old heating system

York 80% Furnace.

The existing York furnace was sitting on an overly complex steel angled frame. So much effort was put in to this angle iron frame. Half that effort could have been put into making a simple transitional base can. But, it’s in place now and it is what we have to work with. Professional installations should be simple and functional, with no more than the necessary parts and pieces.

Many times, when we find a messy, complex, or non-standard install we know that the previous installer was not a true professional. These systems are usually less efficient and less reliable than they were designed by the manufacturer to be. Saving a few dollars on an install can often cost much more over the years.

Simplify for the Win

We adapted the new American Standard 95% efficiency 2-stage variable-speed gas furnace into the existing duct system. Some simple modifications were made to the supply and return plena. A new PVC vent pipe and a new condensate drain line were run. Everything else simply bolted right up, and it worked great when we were done.

It is incredibly satisfying to walk in to a mess of complexity and inefficiency and leave behind a beautiful, clean, and simple heating system that the owner will enjoy for many years.

Older Lennox 80% To New 95% 2 Stage Variable.

This older Lennox 80% Furnace had a control board that went beyond having a hot spot. The existing board actually caught fire and caused some alarm in the home.

When your furnace gets beyond 10 years of age we usually(based on expense) like to give our customers the option of repairing or replacing. And in this case you have to consider the cost of the control board and any other unknown electrical part that has failed.

New Variable Speed 2 stage 95% American Standard Furnace

If you have not figured this out by now by reading our posts is that the American Standard 95% 2 stage Variable speed gas furnace is our favorite furnace to install. We have had almost zero warranty issues caused by the manufacture. That being said we have had installation issues .. .primarily getting a good slope on the drain line when existing the right side of the cabinet. Its very hard to do with all the components in the way. BUT as you can see the furnace slipped right in to place with very little modifications. Venting changed and a condensate line added.
