A Rheem 90 to American Standard
My customer was done with her Rheem imperial 90% gas furnace , the age and condition of the furnace simply did not justify the amount of money she was about to put in to it for repairs.

Like I have said in many past posts “I love replacing Rheem furnaces” and here is another opportunity to do just that.
Single Stage American Standard 95% gas furnace
The new American Standard 95% single stage gas furnace has the exact same foot print as the Rheem furnace, but is a little shorter. All that was needed was a simple transition to adapt to the existing return ducting and it slipped right in to place. Because the existing Rheem furnace was an high efficient model we where able to reuse the existing PVC venting and condensate line.
We also converted the Honeywell electronic air cleaner to a 4″ pleated air filter bank so she did not have to worry about washing her cells every 3 months.

In the photo above you see the the top half of a Carrier gas furnace. Whats different about this furnace install is it is vented with ABS and not PVC, 1-1/2″ not 2″ and it is also vented out the side of the unit not the top, making it very difficult to access a filter system, like this Honeywell with an American Standard furnace.
American Standard 95% Single Stage Furnace.
This is a typical challenge for Alpine Heating And Cooling. What we did was fabricate and install a transition on top of the furnace, raising the existing Honeywell air cleaner up and out of the way so we can run the new PVC venting/combustion air pipe. We then replaced the undersized ABS venting with new PVC venting all the way up and out through the roof. Everything else bolted right up.

York to American Standard
Once in awhile I come across a furnace that my previous company installed … and very rarely one that I actually installed. This particular furnace was installed by my previous company that I co-owned back in 1996.

After going over all the options and the paybacks on the American Standard equipment my customer decided to just swap back to an 80% gas furnace. I would have to agree .. sometimes the paybacks are just not there.

I had to do some small transition work to adapt the new furnace to the existing base can and a few more transitions to adapt the new Honeywell F100 air cleaner to the existing return ducting. Other than that everything connected right back to the new furnace.

One of our commercial management customers that we do business with had us replace an exiting Climatrol to American Standard 80% gas furnace.

Ok … no big deal, just another American Standard 80% gas furnace replacement story, but that’s not why I decided to blog this particular install. In this case the existing thermostat control wire had been severed during construction… and with virtually no way of running a new wire it left us stumped. That is when we decided to try the new Honeywell wireless thermostat.

As you can see above it looks like a typical programmable thermostat .. but in reality it runs off batteries and it is wireless.

The Honeywell wireless module gets installed back at the furnace .. and connect up to the thermostat wirelessly. This allows us to put the thermostat in any location within the space. I can think of at least a dozens times where thermostats have been installed in bad locations … this device will solve that problem.

Low-end Furnaces Have Problems
I really don’t encounter to may many HEIL 90% gas furnaces in this area. This particular HEIL unit was having enough issues to cause my customer to be concerned. Just opening the doors, I could see that this unit was having the same issues the RHEEM units have with the internal drain connections dripping water down on the burners.
Another issue was noise. Most of these lower end pieces of equipment like HEIL, YORK and Coleman use the cabinet as the sealed combustion chamber. This cuts down on costs, but increases the noise level of the unit itself.

American Standard uses an independent combustion chamber. This puts another wall of metal between the burners and the cabinet of the furnace, reducing the burner noise. And when noise is a factor this is a big deal.

As you can see above the American Standard 95% furnace slipped right in to place. The existing PVC vent, drain and gas connections where utilized. Once the unit was up and running my customer noticed a big reduction in noise. She feels confident that she will not have a furnace failure in the dead of winter.

This Furnace Needed Replacing!
One of, if not the worst install I have seen in my entire career. I can not for the life of me figure out what the installer was thinking when he scabbed one system onto another system. He didn’t realize the air would be just going around in a circle!

How Did the System Work at All?
There was a Goodman heat pump system that had been operational, then someone installed the Coleman 90% furnace into that system, I can’t imagine how poorly this system operated. Off to the side of the mechanical room was a dead Lennox pulse as well. Seeing all the different equipment tells me there several times someone could have corrected this mess.
New American Standard Single Stage 95% Furnace
A Clean Slate
After digging in and removing all the junk, we finally could see a clear path forward. We installed an American Standard 95% efficiency single stage gas unit with a Honeywell F100 filter system. There is no doubt that not only will we deliver more air flow but at a higher efficiency. There will be far less leakage and better filtration.

Spend Money to Save Money
The 2 Payne 90% LP furnaces were getting more and more costly to repair and maintain. My customer decided it was better to replace them than to have constant repair bills. Based on the condition on these 2 furnaces, I had to agree.

It’s not very often in a residential application I get to show a side by side comparison between an upflow and downflow furnace.The furnace on the left is an downflow and the one on the right is an upflow. You can tell by the way the ducting is routed.

Honeywell F100 Filters for the Win
The 2 new American Standard 95% LP furnaces where fairly easy to install with some duct alterations mainly to the upflow furnace. You can see the 2 new Honeywell F100 filter banks installed on the intakes of the furnaces. Adding the F100 filters really improves indoor air quality in the home. These systems gives the customer the option of converting them over to electronic at a later date if need be.
