A few times a year I get asked to gas pipe in a generator, in this case it was to a Kolher 30kw.
Kohler Generator
Because a 30kw generator takes more gas than what a normal household gas line can carry the customer had the gas company install a high pressure gas meter. We then installed a pressure regulator at the generator location. This way we had plenty of fuel for the larger generator.

Above you see the new gas line with a new regulator installed. You will also notice we added a pressure gauge and bleeder after the regulator. My customer wanted to be able to monitor the pressure and bleed of any air or gas if need be.

Many years ago I install tons of Lennox Pulse furnaces, and I absolutely hated them. Not only were extremely heavy, they were extremely loud. The very first thing out of the customers mouth was “wow this furnace is noisy”.

The nice thing about Lennox pulse furnaces is replacing them. The American Standard 95% Variable 2-Stage is a little shorter making it easier to retro fit in … and the American Standard is VERY quiet compared to the Lennox.
New 95% 2 Stage Variable American Standard
As you can tell the American Standard 95% 2 stage variable fit right into place with a few minor duct changes. Because our customer was complaining about a musty smell in their home as well as concerns over filtration we installed a F300 Honeywell Electronic Air Cleaner as well as a Sun-Pure UV light system. I also added a low wall return duct to help pull cold air off the floor.

If you have a hydronic heating system, and you have an older Wirsbo manifold system I would think about looking at the condition of that system. In particular I would be looking at the gaskets, these have rubber or ceramic type gaskets, these gaskets need to inspected and or replaced every 10 years(in my opinion).

In this manifold we found several damaged gaskets, we elected to replace all 6 gaskets in 3 different locations through out the home.

Time was up for this 20 year old Lennox, actually looking at the burners Id say time was up several years ago. I can honestly say my customer got the life out of the old Lennox.
Older Lennox Furnace
You have to wonder what the installer and or designer was thinking when they installed this Lennox furnace facing towards a basement concrete wall. Obviously to me it was easier for the installer, but what about servicing or simply changing the filter.
New 80% American Standard Furnace
I turned the new American Standard 80% furnace so it faced out in to the room and then installed a new Honeywell 4″ pleated filter system. Now my customer can replace the filter easier and the service technician has plenty of room to do maintenance.

This older Amana furnace has seen its last days, I would have to say that it has lived a full life. If you have a furnace in your home and it has a pilot light … seriously give me a call and lets start saving you money.
Older Amana 80%
I often look for signs that there has be equipment changes before, like vent reducers, over/under sized base cans and or different wall colors behind the equipment. Here we have a very odd situation, we have no real base can … just a transition up to the furnace with a wooden stand under the furnace. I have to say this “It worked!”
American Standard 95% STD Furnace
After removing the older Amana we installed a supply base can and adapted to the existing supply ducting. Just under the base can we installed air deflectors to help divide up the air. The new American Standard 95% furnace sat right on the new base can and we installed a new transition from the furnace to the existing return ducting. The new PVC vent went straight up through the roof and the drain was ran into the existing drain line. Everything else was reconnected.
Now a repeated note … I only recommend what I would use if it where my home, in this case the ducting was not insulated and there where some duct leakage issues. So I recommended an American Standard 95% NON-Variable furnace. A variable would have cost them even more money to operate.

This Arcoaire 80% furnace has seen its last days, the repair costs are getting to be to much for my customer. Time for a upgrade to a reliable furnace.
Older Arcoaire Furnace
In this installation we are looking at an upflow furnace, not your typical NW Washington installation. The supply air is discharged from the top while the return air comes in from the bottom.
New American Standard 95% 2 Stage Variable Upflow
Like any other brand American Standard makes more models of upflow furnaces than downflow furnaces, this is because most of the market does not have crawl spaces. This American Standard 95% 2 stage variable furnace fit right into place. I made a new base can for the furnace to sit on and new transition to reconnect to the supply ducting. I then added a Honeywell 4″ pleated filter system off the basecan. Old vent was removed and we vented the furnace sidewall of the garage.
I know I keep repeating myself … but American Standard IMO is the best furnace you can own. I have sold, serviced and installed them and can tell you I’m very proud to be a dealer!

Here we have an Arcoaire gas pack, they are called gas packs because they are both an air conditioner as well as a gas heater packaged together. In our neck of the woods we seldom see a gas pack used in a residential application like this.

I think using gas packs is a great concept for residential homes if you have the place for it and you can get your ducting routed to it. This Arcoaire has seen its last days, the control board was no longer available so we recommended going to a RHEEM Packaged Heat Pump. Switching from LP as their main source of heat to a heat pump with LP back up heat will really save them money.

The RHEEM unit dropped right into place all we really have to do had was remake the connecting transitions, everything else was minor.

What a huge difference this will make for my customer… unfortunately these are new tenants who just moved in who have no idea how much their heating bills could have been, thanks to the owner who decided to upgrade their system.
Older Lennox Oil Furnace
The existing Lennox oil furnace was only a couple years old but because natural gas was coming down the street and new tenants where moving in I think it was a wise decision to replace it with the American Standard 95% single stage furnace at this time.

In my opinion … If your existing ducting is located outside of the living space, is questionable on how well it is sealed or insulated and can not be repaired I would consider looking at a single stage versus a multi stage piece furnace. Unless your more worried about comfort than your are efficiency than think about the American Standard 95% 2 stage variable.
